Write yourself a letter for the new year

If you wrote yourself a letter looking back on the past year what would you say to yourself?  If you think hard about it, you might recognize the challenges you have faced and overcome, the goals you have succeeded in meeting and the trials of day-to-day life you have managed.  You could write about what you wish for yourself for the coming year, and identify the goals that are really important to you and identify those you feel motivated to succeed in.

 

For the past several years it has been our habit to write ourselves a letter.  We do it early in January and date it to be opened on January 1 of the next year.  In that letter we identify the things we want to work on, the challenges we are facing, as well as our hopes and dreams for the upcoming year.  We also describe the ways we feel we have succeeded in the past year and where we thought we could have made more of an effort to meet our goals.

 

This reflective exercise serves several purposes.  It reminds us of what we have accomplished and created in the past year, to recognize and acknowledge our learning’s and to re-evaluate the visions for our desires for the next year.  It reinforces the insights we have had, new perspectives we’ve learned and what our intentions are for the next steps in our journey.  The letter can be written in a way that celebrates the goals you want to reach in 2008.  As Ben Zander suggests in his book the Art of Possibility, write your letter as if you have already accomplished the things you are setting out to do.  Give yourself an “A” and state how much you have done, even though you are still at the beginning of that process.
